Owl Cleaner’s Love Story Part 3: From One Bride To Another

bride and groom with wedding party cheering

This is the last piece of our story with Paige Delbene, a Pittsburgh bride who found Owl Cleaners for her pre and post-wedding needs.

Though we have walked through Paige’s wedding story from New York to Pittsburgh, back to New York, and to her parents’ backyard, we want to leave brides in all forms with some advice, tips, and information that Paige has learned from her own dress experience. Plus, Heather has been an expert for years, and she has seen it all when it comes to wedding dresses.

From Paige:

  1. Shop for your dress at least a year early. Paige touched on how happy she was that she started her dress shopping practice early and didn’t wait, especially since the pandemic happened not long after she first visited Kleinfeld.
  2. Schedule an accessories appointment. If you know you want accessories for your big day but you don’t want to purchase everything at once, be sure to schedule a separate appointment to do so. “Don’t wait until the last minute like I did, though it luckily worked out,” recounts Paige.
  3. Clean and Preserve Early! Paige emphasized the importance of cleaning and preserving your dress early and not waiting, especially if there are hard stains. “The longer you wait, the stains will start to settle in.”
  4. Try to budget for a preservation as much as possible. Paige budgeted for her dress and saved for years prior, but she didn’t look too much into preservation costs beforehand. Paige suggests reaching out to other brides with similarly-sized gowns and seeing if they have any insight into the price. “It’s all about asking around and networking with other brides, especially in Pittsburgh.”

From Heather:

  1. Trust is important. A large reason why Paige and Heather worked so well together is that there was a level of trust on both ends that helped the processes go flawlessly. “We had trust!” excitedly recounts Heather.
  2. Preservation is not a job for just one. Being a professional, Heather knew that for a dress as large and expensive as Paige’s, she would need to consult with others. “My bridal cleaner, who has 30 years of experience cleaning fine gowns, assisted me with Paige’s cleaning plan. As we are a member of America’s Best Cleaners and Wedding Gown Specialist, I consulted with two other bridal cleaning consultants on our cleaning plan for Paige’s dress as well, before execution.”
  3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Since every dress is different, don’t hesitate to call and ask questions or set up a consultation. “Every dress that we clean and preserve is unique due to the type of fabric, beading, construction, weight, size, depth, length of dress and train, and requires different cleaning processes and finishing techniques. It is always our/my goal to present our absolute best work to every bride.”
  4. Preservation is forever. No matter the cost of your dress, you shouldn’t skimp on the cost of preservation. Your dress is something you have to treasure forever!

Owl Cleaner’s Love Story Part 2: From Owl Cleaners To ‘I Do’

This is a continuation of our story with Paige Delbene, a Pittsburgh bride who found Owl Cleaners for her pre and post-wedding needs.

We last left off with Paige finding Owl Cleaners just in time for her stunning wedding dress to come to life for her wedding day. Heather worked her magic to finish the dress in time for Paige to walk down the aisle, though these plans for Paige were also significantly different than planned due to the current pandemic.

Paige’s wedding went from the Omni William Penn Hotel to her parent’s backyard.

“Since the wedding was moved outside, my dress was so dirty, there were red wine stains, and I even had a strap break.”

We’ll spare the details of how the strap broke (a combination of an excited guest and open bar), but this was not something Paige anticipated happening.

“All of a sudden, I heard a pop and a strap just popped off in the middle of the dance floor, and I was like, Oh my god, my dress just broke.”

Luckily, the wedding planner saved the day and the dress for the rest of the wedding. Plus, an eventful wedding provided Heather with the exciting task of bringing this dress back to life again, but differently.

“After personally witnessing my level of love, attention, and care to the finishing/packaging of her dress and need for absolute perfection, Paige asked if I would clean and preserve her gown post-wedding. We had trust! Because she is absolutely wonderful to work with, and I knew I was the right/ best cleaner and preservationist for this beautiful dress, I said, Yes, to the dress.”

Having a feeling that Paige would trust her to clean the dress post-wedding, Heather already had a cleaning plan ready to execute.

“As we are a member of America’s Best Cleaners and Wedding Gown Specialist, I consulted with two other bridal cleaning consultants on our cleaning plan for Paige’s dress as well, before execution. It had a few difficult stains (pink lipstick, red wine, grass and hemline soil.) Paige’s dress was voluminous (many layers of tulle) and heavy. It weighed 20-30 pounds. The dress’s entire bodice/straps were encrusted with Swarovski crystal, which required special care when being cleaned. This was an extremely challenging but fun dress to clean due to the many layers, long train, and delicate Swarovski crystals. We had special hoists to help us elevate the gown so we could work on it stress-free and steam it.”

To finish off this unique (and not at all easy) job, there was one thing left to do: find the perfect box. As you could have already guessed, this was not an ordinary dress, meaning that a special box needed to keep it preserved.

“We had to custom create our own acid-free box large enough to preserve and protect the gown. My seamstress also custom-designed and sewed a muslin bag with a silk rope to further protect the actual preservation box, which protected the dress. We used almost an entire ream of acid-free preservationists tissue within the preservation.”

Paige stressed that she wanted to preserve her dress sooner rather than later to make sure it looked as close to perfect as possible for someone to wear again someday.

From pre to post wedding, Heather was able to help Paige achieve her real fairytale wedding, even in the middle of a pandemic.

A Dream Dress: Owl Cleaners’ Love Story (Part 1)

bride in forest

As we ended 2020 and start 2021, a year of unpredictable and unexpected turns, it feels that much more special to reflect on and retell some of the stand-out and joyous moments. For Owl Cleaners, there have been numerous twists and turns and pivots, but one thing that does stand true is the commitment to the work that can still be done.

“I need to begin this by saying that we are extremely thankful and grateful for Paige. She was an absolute joy to work with,” Heather Ziccarelli, wedding dress expert, relays about a very special customer and experience.

“She brought her absolutely stunning beautiful gown to us right after COVID had hit and many businesses were shut down. I was truly honored to work on this special gown and to have the opportunity to prove/showcase our skills as an exceptional bridal cleaner and preservationist.”

Here comes the bride: Paige Delbene, a COVID bride who started her wedding dress search in the summer of 2019 (exactly a year before her wedding was supposed to occur in Downtown Pittsburgh), had a very different experience than expected. However, through her navigation of becoming a bride in 2020, that’s how she found her way to Heather for her pre-wedding dress finishing before she walked down the aisle.

Keep reading to see how Paige and Heather’s worlds collided to turn Paige’s dream wedding dress wedding-ready in time for her big day!

Paige Delbene, a Pittsburgh bride, knew she wanted to have her dress shopping experience at Kleinfeld in New York City for a very long time. The store is known for its presence on Say Yes To The Dress. She even knew which designer she wanted to wear on her big day, Pnina Tornai, and had the chance to meet her while trying on gowns in July of 2019.

“Pnina was so extremely sweet. Her presence filled the entire room of brides, family and friends. I chose to schedule my appointment during her trunk show in hopes that she would be there on site that weekend. I was hoping to get a picture with her but I never imagined that she would help with my entire appointment but that’s exactly what she did! She helped me shop and customized my dream dress and then did the final measurements on me herself! We took pictures and a video of me saying “yes to the dress” which she later posted on her instagram account along with a photo from our wedding.

Once she secured her dream dress, she knew she would be back in New York in 2020 to have her final fittings leading up to her wedding. However, during this time, the pandemic became global, and the world shifted. Kleinfeld and Paige went back and forth for months about making sure the dress came in time and that she could have her final fitting.

During the summer of 2020, Paige made a solo trip back to New York, this time without her posse and not as magical of an experience.

“I had a problem with the hotel, which complicated my experience, and it was so strange wearing a mask while having a final fitting.”

Though Paige was able to have a final fitting, she chose to have the stunning dress shipped to her home in PA instead so that she could make any other alterations locally the days before her wedding. Adding to the list of things not going to plan, to Paige’s horror, the dress arrived wrinkled from the shipping box and unwearable just days before the wedding.

“I was panicking and unsure of what to do because I had just spent so much money on my dream dress and didn’t know if I had enough time to bring it back to New York to finish and press before I walked down the aisle.”

To no one’s surprise, this is where Heather comes in.

Recommended by friends and research online, Heather from Owl Cleaners met with Paige six days before the wedding, and they were able to save the day for Paige and her dream designer dress.

“We fully steamed and hand manipulated the dress while steaming so it would lay correctly for the upcoming wedding. It took two of us and almost two hours to complete this work. We packaged the dress so it could be transported easily without wrinkling it. The entire bodice was stuffed and layered with acid-free tissue to protect it and help it keep its beautiful shape.”

With Heather and her team able to step up for Paige, Paige’s big day was a huge success, and she was able to enter her wedding day without stress over her dress’s appearance.

How I Finally Changed My Views On Wedding Gown Preservation

Wedding gown preservation isn’t for everyone. Some people would much rather sell or donate their bridal attire than stuff it in a box never to see the light of day again. Even our editor and owner, Victoria, admits that she was one of those people. Until she met Heather of Owl Premier & Bridal. Here is Victoria’s tale of how Heather made her do a complete 180 and change her mind about wedding dress preservation!

Real talk: when I was a bride, I was very much anti-wedding gown preservation. As a very sentimental person, my wedding dress wasn’t just “a dress” to me. It held memories and emotions and brought back nostalgic feelings of happiness and love. I felt that as I grew older, I would want to be able to touch the fabric, hold it up against my body (and joke about how it probably no longer fit), and look at it without a plastic window in the way. The idea of stuffing my dress in a box never to be opened again made me sad. Nope, preserving my wedding dress just wasn’t for me.

Or so I thought…fast forward five years later and we were preparing to celebrate a milestone anniversary. For the past 1,825 days, my wedding dress had hung in a plastic garment bag in a closet on the third floor of my (un-air conditioned) house. Had I ever once opened it up to touch the fabric or hold it up against my body? You guessed it. For as much as I felt like I wanted to do those things, it was sure taking me a long time to get around to doing them. Essentially, I was allowing my dress to deteriorate slowly for no good reason at all. I imagined myself opening this same closet in 50 years to find a yellow, tattered version of the dress I once knew and loved. Now, that thought really made me sad. Maybe I needed to reconsider this whole wedding gown preservation thing…

What a coincidence that I had recently become friends with Heather, the owner of Owl Premier & Bridal. I had always been impressed with Heather’s vast knowledge of textiles and how to care for each one of them, as well as her affinity for vintage and couture fashion. If there was ever anyone who would care for and appreciate my gown as much as I did, it was Heather.

At our consultation (which she has with every bride), I candidly expressed my concerns about preserving my wedding gown and not wanting it sealed in a tomb forever. It was clear that Heather understood my wishes and the value I put on those tangible memories. We also went over every inch of the dress, looking for stains and soiling together as I recounted the memories of how they got there…those “just married” photos in the gritty Strip District, an overzealous bridesmaid spilling a beer on me, a midnight trip to Primanti Brothers. She described in great detail the wedding dress cleaning and packaging process, thereby easing my fears and transforming my pre-conceived notions of wedding gown preservation. I confidently handed off the most valuable article of clothing I owned to Pittsburgh Gown Preservation and waited for Heather to get in touch

How could I ever stuff this beautiful thing in a box?!

A few weeks later, my preserved wedding dress was ready for pick up. Again, Heather was there waiting for me. After putting on white gloves (no…really!), she hung up my freshly cleaned gown and spread out the layered chiffon train so I could inspect it from top to bottom. She explained how the dress was meticulously wet and hand-cleaned by 76-year old Sandy Thompson, Pittsburgh Gown Preservation’s wedding dress specialist who has been there for over 45 years. It was so sweet to think of Sandy painstakingly poring over my gown as if it were her very own memories she was preserving. Post-wedding, my dress had the expected dirty hem and random staining from a night well lived; now it was in pristine condition thanks to Sandy! I gave the cleaning my stamp of approval and then the preservation began before my very eyes.

The unassuming large white box is actually quite special – it’s covered with microscopic holes that will let air in. It’s a misconception that your wedding dress should be vacuum sealed – fabrics are meant to BREATHE! Inside the box are layers and layers of acid-free paper that won’t stain or harm the gown. Heather neatly placed the train in first, and then situated the bodice of the dress so that it would show prettily through the box’s window.

The finishing touch was a muslin bow tied around the waist of the dress to keep it from sliding around in the box. I took a few final photos and said what I thought was goodbye to my dress before the lid was placed on top of the box.

As it turns out, I was wrong again. In the box, Heather included a pair of white gloves for me, should I ever want to open it up and touch my dress. However, what Heather recommends and encourages is for brides to bring their box back to the store. At no extra charge, they will personally unbox the dress, let you see how it has aged, and properly re-preserve it for you (or re-clean it is something has gone awry). As someone who is clearly obsessed with being able to relive my wedding day through my dress, I will definitely be taking advantage of this service! Until then, the box, which Heather then placed into a linen bag with a handle for easy carrying, conveniently sits in the closet of a spare bedroom in my new house (and this one’s air conditioned!).

Having the dress close to me but also protected from time means so much, and after going through this process with Heather and Owl Premier & Bridal, there’s no doubt in my mind that I did the right thing. The highly boutique experience and completely individualized attention I received was so reassuring. You simply won’t find this with mail-in preservation services or even with other area cleaners.

Owl Premier & Bridal and Pittsburgh Gown Preservation is a member of a hand-selected elite group; they are the ONLY Certified Wedding Gown Specialist and member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists in Pittsburgh (yes, those are real things). And while Owl Cleaners does dry clean everyday clothing, this isn’t just a dry-cleaner offering wedding dress cleaning. Heather and her team take great pride in working with brides, treating them like family, showing extreme gratitude for their business, and making their satisfaction their number one priority.

If you still aren’t convinced that preserving your wedding dress is the right thing for you, it’s totally fine. You don’t even have to decide right now! I’m proof that even five years after the wedding isn’t too late to say yes to this dress service!

Meanwhile, you can still take advantage of Owl Cleaners and Pittsburgh Gown Preservation’s other services like alterations, custom gown redesigns (for a fresh take on your mom’s wedding dress), and even dress steaming (for those out-of-town bridesmaids who had to travel with a gown)! At one time, even we were skeptics about cleaning and preserving a wedding dress but we have since been converted thanks to Owl Premier & Bridal. The life of a wedding dress is a dangerous one, especially when there are glasses of red wine to drink and dance floors to be danced on. Heather Ziccarelli, owner of Owl Premier & Bridal, is an expert when it comes to all things bridal dress cleaning and preservation and wedding fashions. If there is anyone in Pittsburgh who knows their stuff, it’s Heather! Keep reading as she answers some of your most pressing questions about cleaning and preserving a wedding dress. Whether you’ve already worn your wedding dress, just postponed your wedding day, or are in the midst of dress shopping, this info will be beneficial to just about anyone!

What exactly is wedding gown preservation?

At Owl Premier, we carefully hand-clean your wedding gown individually – never with other bridal dresses. We take every precaution to protect delicate beads, embroidery, and lace during the cleaning process. Stains containing sugar, salt, and acid often dry clean but can turn ugly brown over time. Our unique anti-sugar stain treatment ensures that all sugar, salt, and acid – both seen and unseen – are removed. Our award-winning green wedding gown preservations include a written guarantee that your wedding gown will not yellow or have caramelized sugar stains.

As part of our bridal gown preservation process, you will personally inspect your wedding gown after it is cleaned. Then, while you wait, we carefully layer your gown with acid-free tissues as we fold it into a completely acid-free preservation box.

White gloves are provided so you may safely handle your wedding gown if you choose to open it.

When your wedding gown is worn again in the future, it will be pressed at no charge by any member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, which is represented in more than 500 locations across the world.

What factors should I consider when thinking about preserving my dress?

Doesn’t the most important dress that you will ever wear deserve to be cleaned, preserved, and protected for future generations to admire, cherish, and possibly wear again?

If there is no emotional attachment to your dress, then it is definitely an investment piece that can be resold to another future soonly-wed. However, it must be cleaned first. There is also value in the fabric and beaded embellishments of a dress. Many have items made from the fabric of their dress, such as bassinet covers, pillows, or beautiful throw blankets, just to name a few. I have also had clients shorten their dresses to be worn on their first anniversary during a special dinner with their partner.

What should I look for in a wedding dress cleaning and preservation provider?

Longevity in business. Owl Cleaners is a second-generation family-owned and operated business and we are celebrating our 69th year in business!

You should also pay attention to professional designations. We are Pittsburgh’s only Certified Gown Specialist and Preservationist and have been certified for 23 years. Always choose a Certified Gown Specialist who will process your bridal gown in their own facility, never one who sends your bridal gown away to be cleaned. We clean, finish, and preserve all gowns at our award-winning cleaning plant in Warrendale, PA.

You should also discuss the stains on your gown with the specialist to make sure they will be removed properly and completely.

What is the cost, on average?

It is completely a case-by-case cost. At Owl, I personally meet with all of my clients. We review and inspect the dress together. I point out conditional items that may exist, such as rips, missing buttons, missing/loose beads, highly embedded extreme soil, problematic stains such as red wine or caramelized sugar, etc. I provide a price estimate for cleaning/finishing and preservation at this time. Minor repairs are offered at no charge.

We also offer a $25 discount to those who mention Burgh Brides!

Do spray tan stains come out?

It depends on the fabric. A spray tan on a 100% silk dress can be very challenging to remove. We always strive to do everything that we can to remove this. But a spray tan on polyester or lace fabrics is typically remediated in the cleaning process.

Can you preserve other items like a veil or belt?

Yes, all veils and belts are hand-cleaned and then wrapped in acid-free tissue and preserved with the gown.

Where is the best place to store a gown once it is preserved?

Always avoid storing your bridal gown in the attic or basement where there are extreme changes in temperature or humidity. Avoid resting your wedding gown chest against outside walls too because dampness can migrate through the wall and penetrate the wedding chest.

It’s best to store your gown in a temperature-controlled environment – one that is heated and air-conditioned.
