Two Generations, One Dress: A Wedding Gown Restored with Love
How one bride’s devotion to honoring the love stories from the past shaped her wedding day. For Tricia Cigna-Herlocher, she never envisioned her wedding dress being about trends or a picture-perfect vision. It was always about the meaning.
If you had asked her years ago what she would wear on her wedding day, she would not have had an answer. She always loved the idea of marriage and building a life with her best friend, but the spotlight of a traditional wedding never felt like the main event; what mattered most to her was intention.
So when the idea struck to try on her mother’s wedding gown, it only felt right. She asked her mom to pull the dress down from the attic just to see, and to everyone’s surprise, it fit. The zipper would not close in the back, which ultimately led to a beautiful open back design that felt both modern and personal. The moment she put it on, she knew the feeling that every bride hopes to have: this was the dress.
Before alterations could begin, the gown needed significant restoration. After all, it was 40 years old, and there were no guarantees. This is where Heather and the team at Owl Cleaners stepped in.
Heather was immediately transparent about the dress and its condition. Could the dress be saved? Was Tricia’s vision able to become a reality? With these questions in mind, Heather did what she does best: she was upfront, detailed, and honest. If there’s one thing about Heather and her approach to gown preservation, it’s that trust is always at the forefront!
“From the very beginning, Heather was incredibly honest. She was clear that she couldn’t promise a perfect outcome, but she did promise transparency and that we’d be on the journey together. That trust made it an easy yes for me. I was all in,” Tricia explained about her experience.
What surprised Tricia and her mother the most was just how beautifully the gown came back to life. The areas they were most concerned about were carefully restored, the fabric was brighter, and even the details felt new. After the cleaning and restoration process was complete, the gown moved on to another amazing local business, Topaz Thimble, for alterations.
There was one tiny mark that remained, most likely from champagne spilled at her parents’ wedding decades earlier. Instead of wishing it away, Tricia embraced it.
“Wearing that same mark on my own wedding day was so special, like a quiet thread connecting us,” Tricia shared.
And what a beautiful, symbolic tribute to the theme of meaning that Tricia wanted to shape from the very beginning of her wedding day!
The theme of intention was evident throughout her wedding day in so many details, such as the red roses on each table, which honored her late father, and the Valentine’s Day bouquets he gave her throughout her life. There were cookies baked by both mothers, a tribute to family tradition. Even the readings were carefully chosen with a subtle nod to her nephew’s love of Toy Story.
Her advice to brides considering a vintage gown is simple: find the right partners and treat the process like a journey, not a transaction.
“A quality cleaner and alteration expert who is genuine, honest, collaborative, and respectful of the history makes all the difference.”
Thirty minutes before her ceremony, her photographer placed her in mounds of dirt in an overgrown Lawrenceville alley for portraits. After everything it took to restore the dress, she never once checked the hem. But she didn’t care. Those photos became her favorite of the entire day. That’s when Tricia knew she had done it right.

As for her advice to soon-to-be brides, Tricia reiterates that they should trust the process and the people they choose to work with. Find vendors who are masters of their craft and allow them to do what they do best, so you can keep your focus on what truly matters. As her best friend reminded her during planning, a wedding is the rare moment when everyone you love most is in the same room.
